Course Description and Learning Objectives

Course Content Levels are Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.

Sobering statistics reveal how important engagement is to your practice. Dr. Sells will introduce the FST Motivational Interview technique that will allow you to quickly engage even your most difficult parents or clients. The Five Question Motivational Script and case examples will enable you to onboard this technique with great success the next day at work.  Hear examples of actual audio excerpts and identify key moments of change from the questions that demonstrated high joining response.   Rooted in structural strategic theory, FST | Family Systems Trauma training includes step-by-step procedures to treat the entire family.  During this training, participants will receive both step-by-step tools and handouts to show how to work more effectively with the both traumatized child within their traumatized family.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand and apply the MI Phone Call Technique through a manualized five-question script.
  2. Define and identify the differences between what is termed a soft start-up vs. a harsh start-up with families
  3. Understand Prochaska’s Readiness of Change Theory and how the MI Phone Call integrates with this theory and moves the parent quickly from a state of Precontemplativebefore the MI call (“just fix my child, its not my problem) to a state of Contemplation (i.e., “I have changed my perspective from this call”)
  4. Apply important the MI Phone Call delivery implementation tactics of “process vs. content” and “closing arguments” through case examples.
